RAAAAWRRR!!! Drawing #19

This is a dinosaur sketched out on Arlyn's nephew, Isaac's, birthday card.

The pressure was on. I've seen thousands of T-Rex renderings in my life, how hard could it be to draw from memory?

Harder than I thought. Pretty menacing, eh?

That's actually only one claw showing... though it looks like I intended it as two. I think I'm going to try and do a T-Rex again in the same pose but using actual reference.

But first I have a commission. Mika needs a troll. So far it's been terrible. A couple really bad drawings are coming up!

Pascal Campion

This vid was linked around Facebook today, and it's pretty damn inspirational and fitting for this blog.

Bad Robot! (Drawing #18)

Yeah it's a quick doodle... still counts!

Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes baby toys! Drawing #16 and #17.

Growing up in Calgary, Alberta, my two best friends were Jeff and Kevin Swingler. They lived across the street from us, and our families were really tight.

My brother and I went through just about every toy fad there was in the 80's with Jeff, Kevin, and their little brother, David. But the biggest obsession was probably G.I. JOE.

Of all the figures we had, Jeff's favorite was "Storm Shadow", the white Ninja who fought for Cobra, and Kevin was partial (I believe) to "Snake Eyes" The black Ninja, brother to Storm Shadow, who fought for G.I. JOE.

Recently, both Jeff and Kevin had baby boys. So, I figured it would be cool to design some toys to have made and send to them. Below are my designs for "Storm Shadow" and "Snake Eyes" stuffed ninjas. Each will come with a baby blanket with the ninja clan symbol on them.

My girlfriend Arlyn, she of peanut gallery fame, will be making them a reality... she is my hero.

Ummm... More Bad Drawings Coming?!?! (Also Drawing #15)

The intentions to do more bad drawings exist, but not so much the DRIVE to do them.

Often, at work, I'll walk by my pal Jeff Bailey's desk and see he has a page of little, awesome doodles sitting in front of him. I'll look over them with jealousy. Generally, when I try to doodle, I'll just stare at the page until I get frustrated enough to just say "fuckit" and just start watching TV instead.

Or I get super frustrated and draw out my feelings in sketch form:

Yes... I know... What's up with the hands? I DON'T KNOW!

I can see them in my HEAD, but when I put pencil to paper, THAT happens. I know it's wrong, but still, can't seem to fix it right.

Ah well... one more bad drawing out of my system. I'm really going to have to pick up the pace or I'll never be the artist my Mom thinks I am.

Funny, I just noticed in the background, behind my head, you can see discarded drawings I attempted by failed at, leaving me want to stab myself with a giant pencil in the first place. They are like the "Ghosts of Past Bad Drawings"

Drawing #14, Bad from the PAST with Guest Artists!

Several months ago, on our way back from Tofino, Me, Jenn Taylor, Arlyn, and Mika, took turns sketching Teen Chan while we took the ferry home.

This is Teen Chan... This is not from when we sketched her

Top Left - Jenn Taylor's sketch. (She of Lucas Animation fame)
Top Right - Mika Bantog's sketch. (Didn't finish)
Bottom Left - Arlyn's Sketch. (She of "Thomas the Tank Engine" and my Girlfriend fame)
Bottom Right - My sketch. (Clearly the best)

I don't know why Teen's face looks so squished in mine. Seemed right at the time. Maybe after a weekend in Tofino, Teen's head was all squished down from too much fun.
