"The Dude, Pinned" BAD DRAWING #100!!!

Okay, yes, I have actually drawn since Bad Drawing #99... but I wanted to hold off so #100 would be one worth mentioning...

I know I SAID #100 would be a video, but I haven't been able to upload it yet, and since I'm tired of waiting to post a #100 drawing, I'm going to forgo the video and post a drawing I did for a local art show...

"Holy Shit, you got in ANOTHER art show?!?!"

Calm down chappy. To get into the show, all I had to do was something in the theme of "The Big Lebowski"... So I could have sketched a bowling ball on a napkin and made it in.

Anyway, "A Million Bad Drawings" is in another show, and that's worthy of a #100 post in my books.

So what's the piece?

DRAWING #100! "The Dude, Pinned!"

It's like a trophy for being awesome

So the idea for this piece came to me as I was in the closing sale of Zellers and found an old bowling pin from their cafe's wall. I bought it for 10 bucks thinking "I can do something Lebowski with this".

My art work shop... the dirt covered common area of our condo...

I took the pin home and spray painted it white... I wanted to get rid of the AMF markings, and knew I would have to seal the hole that they put in it to screw it to their wall...

The back was cut off to have it sit flush to the cafe wall...

I also bought a plaque to attach it to - make it like a little trophy you can hang over your bed.

I sketched out a test drawing to be used on the pin... one that I could transfer on and then ink over... I wasn't completely happy with it... face was a little short and wonky, the shirt collar was wrong... but I figured I could fix all that when I transfer it onto the pin.

The fingers in this version look MUCH better than the flat ones in the final...

I then redid the pin striping on the bowling pin...

Thanks "American Restoration" for showing me the best way to do this...

...and stained and sealed the plaque.

Finally I transferred and attempted to ink "The Dude" onto the pin. Holy shit what a pain. The pen I usually ink with smudged when I did a test. I wouldn't be able to seal the final inking. So instead of my nice smooth pen, I had to use a black Bic. It was shitty and bumpy. Oh well.

Augh... those fingers! In my defense the ink would NOT TAKE to that side of the pin... no idea.

I finished it up and sealed it. When I sealed it, the ink turned purple. It was weird, but looked kinda cool. Ah well.

When I dropped the piece off at the gallery they asked how much I wanted to sell it for. I couldn't answer.

They take 50% commission, which seems CRAZY. So in order for it to be worthwhile to me, I would have to put it up for $400... which is nuts. But 50 % is pretty standard for gallery commission, so it's not really surprising.

When I did the "Deighton's After Dark" art shows I took NO commission. I didn't even consider it. It was just cool to have a night to show peoples art... Help the artists out (cuz artists are notoriously broke). I figured I didn't put any work into the art, why should I take a cut? However, I wasn't renting a space, and all money was made on the bar... so different worlds... ah well.

Anyway, it is unlikely people would pay $50 for this, so I just left the price blank. Maybe I'll change that when I get to the show, I dunno.

Bad Drawing #99 - "Wedding Character Designs That Never Were"

So I finished the drawings for the wedding invite last week, and will post something about all those soon. I guess it will fall under the "100th Bad Drawing!" milestone (or "Milly stoe nay" as I like to pronounce it)

Until I get to all that, here is a quick doodle I did at my desk today for shits and giggles. I was thinking back on what I had done for the invite, and thought that overall it was way too complicated for my drawing capabilities, and therefore the characters ended up looking like they came from a Vancouver film school animation project.

So I tried to do the drawings super loose and shitty, and came up with this:

So looking back at what I've done, vs. what I could have done, this loose version probably would have taken a lot less time, and I wouldn't feel the need to make excuses for the shitty drawings in the final project... cuz they would be purposefully shitty.

Oh well.

I probably would have over thought it any way and ended up with the same VFS looking project in the end.

Bad Drawing Update!

I've been crazy busy trying to get this wedding invite done, and will soon update with some more bad drawings, but for now, here is a nice little preview of what's to come...

I had to take individual photos of the drawings to use as place holders in my video edit while my Girlfriend, Arlyn, colors them... So much work... so many bad drawings.

Creepy Octo-Kid - Bad Drawing #98

www.Aintitcool.com is having a little "Cabin in the Woods" contest for a "visual companion" book... Not sure exactly what that is, but it has all kinds of background on the movie... design... script... anyway I WANT IT.

I want it because I loved the movie, and I love Joss...

Anyway, the idea of the competition is as follows:

"Now, for you arty folks, I want to see an illustration (a quick sketch or a rough doodle will suffice) of a monster of your own design in the Cabin in the Woods universe. I know that’s a tall order given the film, but I have faith in you."

Sounds like another MILLION BAD DRAWINGS contest to me!

This is what I sent in:

You know, as I step back from the drawing and see a photo of it, some of the problems are a little more clear... HOWEVER, I still like it. It's rare I like something I draw, but I do like this. Fuck ups and all. (By fuck ups I mostly mean the tentacles... they bug the shit out of me, but I had no idea how to draw them... this is where you use reference kids!)

Anyway, I needed a monster, something that I would hate to see come at me in the cabin. Well I find creepy kids terrifying... I also find bowl cuts terrifying. Kids with bowl cuts are the worst... so I figured give it a blank stare and tentacles and I would shit my camping shorts should I run across it at a cabin.

Drawing #98... Octo-kid.

Drunken Proclamation Rough... Bad Drawing #97!

Ugh... this didn't work at all.

Continuing on with the wedding project, I needed a drawing of me at a window drunkenly proclaiming my plan to win the heart of some girl... This did not work out (the drawing... not the plan... though the plan only half worked.)

Okay... a lot wrong here on my first go. First off, I don't look drunk really. That is not drunk face.

Second, it is WAY too busy and shitty in the background. intersecting lines... crooked tables. It pretty much all around sucks.

The plan now is to redraw it and leave almost everything out of the BG except for the shitty drawing of Kev and the couch he is sitting on.

Also, what the fuck is going on with the hand holding the sill?!?!?... the fingers to right to the wrist.

The triumphant arm in the air I'm pretty sure connects to NOTHING if you followed the lines down to the shoulder area. Maybe I should try some structure.

These were SUPPOSED to be doodles though... really rough like. I get too wrapped up in having it make sense, and therefor it starts to make no sense at all.

ah well... REDRAW!

An honest to goodness Artist?!?! LOT-O-BOTS! Bad Drawing #96

So there's there's this art show in town called "Carded" where artists submit their work and, if chosen, their work is turned into a cool little trading card. The idea is that you go to the show - whatever night it is - and buy a pack of random cards for 5 bucks. You then walk around the show and trade cards with people... collecting the ones you want.

The people who put this show on do a similar show called "Hot One Inch Action" which is the same idea as "Carded" but with little 1 inch buttons. When Arlyn, Mika and I checked out the button show a few months ago, I thought it was a pretty good time and figured I would attempt to put art in on the next show.

Well the next show turned out to be this "Carded" show. I knew about it a month before the deadline, but I didn't actually sit down and draw anything until the last day (I'm lazy like that). The day before it was due I was sitting in a meeting, remembered the deadline, and I just started doodling in my sketchbook. I liked the doodle enough that I took a pic and sent it in. I actually tried to get Arlyn to color it for me, but she thought it looked fine black and white.

Well success! 150 people submitted, but "Lot-O-Bots" was one of the 50 to get in!

Take that you THREADLESS jerks.

Anyway, My ego is now through the roof, and will probably remain that way until the night of the show when I hear people walking around asking "Will you trade ANYTHING for this stupid robot shit card?"

My first official art show drawing outside of Highschool... "LOT-O-BOTS! - Bad Drawing #96

Kick Ball - Wedding W.I.P. Bad Drawing #94!

I came across this vid today, and while I'm not a fan of the song, I quite like this guys illustrative storytelling.

What I'm working on right now is a drawing based story, and I could only wish my drawings were as expressive as his. I kind of lose it on the expression bit.

I haven't exactly been updating like I said I would. I will tomorrow for sure. For now, here's just a small, shitty sketch I quickly did in my notebook that is part of a bigger drawing I will put up tomorrow.

It's a scene where I kicked a nerf ball into my GF's face.

Bad Drawing 94.

*As an aside, I'm getting grief about not updating with the sketch-a-day book I got from Jenn and Teen last year... I will start updating those to... soon.

So lazy.

SUGAR SKULL PAINT JOB! Bad Drawing #89 and #90!!!

Well I'm back from Mexico, and in full-on creative mode. I've been editing my friends wedding footage like a mad man, and starting on a few other projects. One of these new projects is likely going to be the most time consuming drawing job I'll ever have, and won't be able to reveal til January (where I will rip it apart in my own self-loathing way).

In the mean time I will actually try and put up other stuff I'm doodling away at, in a sad attempt to sharpen my skills...

Anyway... This isn't so much a doodle, but while in Mexico I did do a little art project. I'm actually sorta happy with this (which is rare) so I decided to throw it up on the blog

I'm a HUGE tattoo fan. I've got a couple myself, and more planned for the future (when I'm super wealthy and can afford it). One of the tattoos I would like to get would incorporate Mexican Sugar Skulls. I've been into the design of these skulls for quite a few years, so when I ended up in Mexico for the first time last year, I hunted one down to take home.

See the little floaty skulls? yeah, like that

You can find porcelain sugar skulls in pretty much any shop in Mexico. However, I was a little disappointed with the designs. I was so used to seeing them in tattoos, I guess I sort of expected to see designs closer to what tattoo artists were doing here in North America. Not quite.

This is the one I eventually picked up...

Yeah, I liked it, but not really what I was looking for.

So this year, when we went to Mexico, I decided to try again, and again I found more of the same so-so designs... not quite what I was looking for.

However, at the resort we were staying in, you could paint your OWN pottery, and THEY had skulls as an option. Arlyn suggested we do that rather than buy a finished skull. I agreed. I decided to to sketch out my design the night before, and then Ar and I would go down and paint our own sugar skulls.

This was my design...

These were Arlyn's...

When we got to the table to paint our skulls, Arlyn changed her mind and decided to paint a fish. We sat at our table and got to work. I should also mention we decided to do this THE MORNING WE WERE LEAVING. This made the whole painting experience super stressful. I was swearing like a sailor the entire time... sitting next to a 7 year old girl (who didn't seem to mind the swearing, and instead just stared as I shakily painted a rose on mine)

There were guidelines already drawn on the skull that I didn't want to use, so they had to be painted over first. I felt rushed and stressed out, but I eventually finished. Arlyn and I left our skulls with the guy running the stand so he could add little details, and then varnish. This was really cool as the brushes we had were thick and unruly... and my hands were shaking the whole time. Stress.

Here's the guy touching up Ar's fish

When we came back after packing up our hotel room, and having our last lunch buffet, our art was done! Actually, I shouldn't say done, as the varnish wasn't dry yet. But they now had their little, fine line details, and slightly cleaner lines.

Ar's fish had new little details (which you can kind of see in this pic... little green spots, some black line touches)

Mine had little lines added to the green leaves (the little light green flecks) and the lines on the teeth (not sure I would have done that... but still looked cool)

We were worried about the pieces not being dry yet, so I went to the resort gift shop to see if they had a cardboard box. Like a bull in a china shop, I smashed into one of the gift shop shelves and smashed a painted porcelain plate of some sort. It was actually because I stumbled on something they had left on the floor behind me, but they made me pay for it. It was only 4 bucks, but whatever. I destroyed someone elses painted work while looking to protect mine. Awesome.

They gave me a receipt... souvenir

Anyways, we spent the entire bus ride to the airport trying to air out our pieces, and then mad the plane smell like varnish, but the pieces made it home alive.

Long story... long, that's how I now have Bad Drawing #89 and #90! "Skully McSugarVarnish"

Steam Engine! Bad from the Past! - Bad Drawing #85

REAL drawings still to come, but here I have a little something I did while bored at work.

Mika gave me a coloring book page of an engine... I decided it needed to be more "Thomas"-like and gave it a face... then kept going...

Sort of a drawing?

I'll do better... getting my drawing on this week!!

YOU LIKE BURGERS?!?! Bad Drawing #82!!!

I know, I know... "What the hell??!?"

I have big big plans to draw, or paint, or create, but I'm also busy and super lazy.

I do however still doodle about, but always nonsensical like the thing below...

There you have it. I call it "You like burgers?!"

Scraping the bottom... Bad Drawing #81!

I haven't been drawing AT ALL lately. At all.

This is the closest to anything I've done lately...

Yeah I doodle with a sharpie on a DVD I found lying on the floor.

*sigh*

UPDATED! Graffiti Request... Bad Drawing #78, 79, 80!!

As I was toiling away on my Thomas the Tank Engine editing, I got this message through our inter-office chat system...

(2:37 PM) Arlyn Bantog:
Nana was asking if we knew anyone that can do graffiti

I thought a brief moment, then responded.

(2:37 PM) Ellery_Vandooyeweert:
nope... What does she want?

I wasn't getting an answer, so as I was now distracted from work anyways, I opened up MS Paint and got to work... as I worked, Arlyn responded.

(2:41 PM) Arlyn Bantog: a painting for Jode's birthday
(2:41 PM) Arlyn Bantog: i said either one of us could probably do it depending on what she had in mind
(2:41 PM) Arlyn Bantog: so she's getting pictures together
(2:41 PM) Arlyn Bantog: it could be a case of photoshop and print on canvas

(2:43 PM) Ellery_Vandooyeweert: you can send her this...

I laughed at her response.

(2:43 PM) Arlyn Bantog: did you just make that now?
(2:45 PM) Arlyn Bantog: haha
(2:45 PM) Ellery_Vandooyeweert: no I had it on my desk top for months... heh
(2:45 PM) Ellery_Vandooyeweert: just waiting... and waiting... for you to ask
(2:45 PM) Arlyn Bantog: that's amazing
(2:45 PM) Ellery_Vandooyeweert: thnx
(2:46 PM) Arlyn Bantog: i'm emailing it to her

(2:53 PM) Arlyn Bantog: your bubble letters are so 1988
(2:54 PM) Ellery_Vandooyeweert: I know, eh! You know why? 'Cuz in Grade 7 I was EXTREMELY Jealous that girls in my class could do them so well, that I spent hours trying to learn....
(2:55 PM) Arlyn Bantog: bubble letter envy.... i remember that feeling

Later, Arlyn got this response from Nana...

Thanks for the graffiti Ellery, I was considering something to do with final fantasy that he plays CONSTANTLY...hes got a character or whatever you call them and i was sort of thinking of that character in a graffiti art setting...its really hard to explain and it doesn't have to be EXOTIC...i don't know anything about gaming so i cant ask him anything else as I just texted him and asked him what his game was...i wouldn't even know how to get to his game although I know his character wears a hoodie... I really don't know what it is this is getting so confusing...i thought about a med/small in whatever medium...need to know the cost as well. materials and artistic compensation. xoxo i have been looking online and there's too much, but if i come up with a style? xoxo

I knew from that e-mail EXACTLY what she was wanting.

*Update.

Apparently Nana took a Banksy book out of the library and said she would mark out what stuff she liked as a guide what to do... I'm not sure how Banksy's art would work with Jode and his obsession with hooded characters in Final Fantasy...

Before she could send me anything I took some initiative on my own...

You may now all exit through the gift shop....

Bad Drawing #77! Valentine's Day Robot!

Okay, so this is REALLY reaching counting this as a drawing, but hey, if someone asked "can you draw me a robot?" and I drew this, then it would count. So here it is, Bad Drawing #77!

I did this at Boston Pizza. At BP they have these hearts you can buy for a dollar and then write whatever you want on them. I was eating at BP the night before Valentine's Day and decided to buy one. It's for charity you know...

BTW, I'm "Rutty", "Peanut" is Arlyn's nickname.

I didn't just get her a 1 dollar Boston Pizza heart though, I also got her this monster named Wayne...

Wayne has 4 roses, cuz I gave Ar a rose just before valentines 4 years ago in my attempt to woo her (didn't work... at least not right away) and then added one every Valentines since. This seems a fine idea now, but I can see it backfiring in 20, 30 years...

TAKE THAT, SKULL! Bad Drawing #76!

Arlyn bought these little pot/egg things at Ikea the other day for 5 bucks. They fit together like those russian doll toys... the ones that fit one into the other... yeah those.

Anyways, she bought them saying "We can paint them like sugar skulls!".

So while at work yesterday, I kinda sketched out how that might look... and then for no other reason other than I love Ewoks, I drew an ewok poking it with a spear.

Teen-tini and Jenn-tini! Bad Drawing #74!!

Rolling along with the sketch-a-doodle assignments, here is last weeks "Martini Party".

I had originally wanted to do two people at a party, all stylized and such... like the Madmen DVD covers... but alas... I settled for cutesy cartoony again.

But see? It's Teen and Jenn... And Jenn has her drunk eyes and hearts cuz she gets all "I'm gonna tell her I love herrrrr"...

This weeks doodle is still coming!

I walked into the editing office to find Heather marking up the Wipe board.

Oh Hey, A PRESENT! New Assignments! - Bad Drawings #59, #60, #61

We got a package a few weeks ago from Jenn and Teen over in Singapore. These two ladies are part of our painting group "We Can't Paint!" at http://wecantpaint.blogspot.com/

Oh yeah... that group...

Anyways, in the package I received THIS!

A "Sketch-a-Doodle" book designed and printed by Jenn and Teen. Inside the sketchbook are 52 assignments. One a week, for a year.

I got working on them as fast as I could, to get caught up, but have been to lazy to take pics and post. Well here they are, 3 more Bad Drawings.

Drawing #59:

Once, when I was a kid, we made sock puppets in school. I remember designing it being very stressful. After I had attached the googly eyes, I couldn't think of what else to do to it. I went into a bit of a panic... I was worried that anything I added after the eyes would ruin it. So I left it as just a sock with googly eyes. Well drawing this felt just like being back in kindergarten. I froze after the eyes.

Drawing #60:

This Narwhal is sad cuz it hasn't yet made out in the middle of a street with a hazmat looking astronaut.

Drawing #61

This is an owl. After this third drawing I've decided to try and not make every drawing in this book some sort of attempt at cartooning "cute", or "Cute-ooning" as I'm nowgoing to call it. Million Bad Drawings - Always coining new phrases! or "Coinphrasing"!! (I just came up with that one too). I just noticed now that one of his toes on the right is drawn wrong. I'll pretend he's just mid scratch. Foot itch. Do I win a no-prize?

Thanks Taylor and Teen!

My Brother's Family - A Christmas Present! Bad Drawing/PAINTING #57! (Also #43-56!)

I wanted to try and paint my brother's family as part of their Christmas present this year. I'm not a very good cartoonist, but in the end, I think it actually turned out alright.

It wasn't without a few REALLY bad drawings though.

Trying to get the essence of Troy, Caryn and Jordan is a terrible task for someone who is in no way good at caricatures.

First I attempted a rough of how I would lay it out (Bad Drawing #43) . I realized at this point that I had no idea what pets they own, so I had to give him a call. You can see my awesome notes along the side.

2 short haired cats (grey and brown) and 1 bird. At one point I was going to just draw Jordan holding a dog as I believe she should probably have one eventually.

My brother was the hardest to draw. this was my first attempt (Bad Drawing #44)

I don't actually see my brother as a muppet. I don't know why his mouth looks like that. I figured that even if the drawing looked nothing like Troy in the end, as long as he was wearing a Bears shirt, someone would figure it out.

The 3 top drawings of Troy ( #45, #46, #47) Weren't working at all for me. I got all angry, cursed my inability to cartoon, and then finally drew the one on the bottom (#48 ). This actually said "Troy" to me. I went with it. The two Caryns (#49, #50 ) drove me back to wanting to stab my brain.

TROY!

This sketch (#51) sort of had a Caryn vibe to it that the two scribbled over ones (#52, #53) were lacking... DONE! I gave structuring it out a little better in the bottom doodle(#54).

Jordan I drew once (#55 ). Girls are hard to draw.

So pink colerase in hand, I drew them all standing together (#56 ).

They needed to be standing closer together, so I photocopied the drawing, and cut and pasted them in tighter.

I then transfered to Canvas to paint. It is not lost on me that Caryn's arm seems to meld right into Jordan's arm. BAD. I didn't realize until after it was painted.

Painting was the hardest part. It's not at all as easy as Family Ties makes it look. Also, I don't really know color theory. I have been told I went very saturated with my color choices.

Damn right! Saturated bitches.

Bad Drawing/PAINTING #57!
