Several months ago, on our way back from Tofino, Me, Jenn Taylor, Arlyn, and Mika, took turns sketching Teen Chan while we took the ferry home.
This is Teen Chan... This is not from when we sketched her
Top Left - Jenn Taylor's sketch. (She of Lucas Animation fame) Top Right - Mika Bantog's sketch. (Didn't finish) Bottom Left - Arlyn's Sketch. (She of "Thomas the Tank Engine" and my Girlfriend fame) Bottom Right - My sketch. (Clearly the best)
I don't know why Teen's face looks so squished in mine. Seemed right at the time. Maybe after a weekend in Tofino, Teen's head was all squished down from too much fun.
So it has been pointed out by my pal, Jeff Bailey, that the "Million Bad Drawings" quote is incorrect.
When I did the initial search for this famous (?) quote, I kept getting "Everyone has a million bad drawings in them...". That however is not the real quote...
For the record, here's the quote:
"...it was no discouraging surprise to me that my first instructor at Chouinard Art Institute, like Nicolaides at the Art Students League, greeted his beginning classes with the following grim edict: 'All of you here have one hundred thousand bad drawings in you. The sooner you get rid of them, the better it will be for everyone.'
This was not a discouraging statement to me, because I was already well into my third hundred thousand."
(From page 51 of "Chuck Amuck: The Life and Times of an Animated Cartoonist.")
I even OWN that book.
Well if Chuck Jones had more than 300,000 bad drawings in him, well then I clearly have a million anyways, so the blog title still stands!
Well if number grades mean anything, then the Threadless community officially labeled "Robot Party in my Tummy" one of the "Million BAD Drawings"... like 2.37 out of 5 BAD.
You jerks.
Well anyways... that sucks. Robot Tummy was actually just a Flash rendering of this orignial piece "Orgybots 2000", a piece I did for a Deighton's show way back. Arlyn has it now in her office at work.
So after THAT burn, what now? Do I every try the elitist Threadless again? SURE! What else do I have to do?
At least it gives "A Million Bad Drawings" another project.
There is a problem though... I don't want to be the guy harassing everyone on Facebook to vote anymore, so that means posting any new submission and letting it just be judged by the community at Threadless - and those bastards probably won't let me score me through the first day (you can get booted for having too low a score in the first 24 hours)
So anyone stumbling on this blog, who may or may not spend more than a minute here, please take a look and vote on this. You and I may be strangers, but together we can make dreams come true.
And by dreams, I mean a 60 inch TV to watch Survivor on.
Actually, that's a lie. I'm just really uninspired.
It's weird being uninspired when your girlfriend is right next to you, crafting away, being all creative.
I just have had absolutely ZERO drive these last couple of weeks to do anything creative.
This is weird cause I'm just SURROUNDED by creativity... lets take a look! (good excuse to post pictures!)
First off, Arlyn is knitting and crafting her ass off.
*I like this Alot. I've been buggging for one for a while. So awesome.
You can see her Etsy site HERE and her Blog in the links or HERE
Then last night I became a "fan" of my friend Patricia Atchison's art page on Facebook. Her oil paintings are insane. We have two Giclee's of her art on our walls at home. We hope to add a few more down the road.
This did not turn out AT ALL like I wanted. I kind of killed it.
Looking back at the original sketch/doodle, I lost everything I had liked. The doodle had problems, but at least it was closer to how I saw it in my head.
This just looks stiff. Flat.
It reminds me of when when I was a kid and I would get a coloring book from a cartoon liked (like He-Man), and everything looked wonky and soul-less.
I'm gonna try this again though. I think I know what I did wrong.
And Sorry Indiana, I will try and capture your awesome-ness, without making you look like you've been taxidermied into a pose.
What I learned from this:
Maybe I should try to figure out my perspective first. Arlyn pointed out that Indiana wasn't walking right, so I had to fix (thus all the erasing). when you can't answer "Where's the horizon line?", You're doing it wrong.
I don't know how do draw fur. Especially in a somewhat Cartoony drawing.
Okay so this is the rough I doodled at work while waiting for a render. It's based on Arlyn's suggested drawing "An Ewok walking a Shih-tzu.
I decided the Shih-tzu would be my own Shih-tzu, Indiana. It has been long said he looks like an Ewok, and Arlyn has even talked of making him a cowl.
Anyway, the sketch looks little awkward and may not read quite like I want.
An Ewok, walking, is kind of a pain to draw, cuz they walk like babies... They more hop, side to side, than walk.
Indiana is VERY rough in the drawing. When I clean this up, I will try to make the sketch look more like Indy, and less like an eight legged furry monster.
It was just very hard to figure how his legs should look in walking position.
